You Should Have A Side Hustle - Here's Why

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

If you visit L.A one of the main questions you'll find people ask each other is "what's your side hustle?"

You'll meet a bartender who's a drag queen by night, an office worker who's recording their own album in their spare time, a vet who has a flair for brewing craft beers - everyone's got a little something extra - their own unique passion project.

A while back I found myself in a bit of a funk. I was so obsessed with my job that it came before everything else in my life. I'd work late, miss important occasions and I became a little disconnected from friends and family. One day, something in work didn't go as planned and I almost had a mental breakdown, it honestly felt like heartbreak.

At that moment, I realised I was putting too much in.

I tell myself time and time again in life "never put all your eggs in one basket" when I hadn't looked at my own situation properly. Whether it's a job, a relationship or a hobby - you need to have balance in your life.

Your motivation, creativity, success and happiness cannot all depend on one thing.

This is where the side hustle comes in.

My favourite movie is "500 Days Of Summer" and one of my fave scenes is when Tom starts bouncing a ball and getting his shit together.

I had a moment just like that. I realised that I needed something extra in my life that I would be able to dedicate time to in my day - a bigger dream that I could chip away at bit by bit.

Having a side hustle meant that even if I was having a bad day at work, at least I was having a good day or I was feeling motivated about my other projects. I stopped caring too much and started seeing my stress levels decline.

I started getting excited about ideas and felt a buzz when I woke up in the mornings.

If you haven't guessed already, this website is one of my side hustles.

It brings me so much joy being able to create content for my own platform and share it with you all. When I get an idea in my head I can't sit still until I've put it together and written it all down - I'm feeling the passion flow.

I'm fully in control of working toward my own goals - if I don't post anything, the site will never get to where I want it to be.

Why do you need a side hustle?

The goal of a side hustle is to add passion and fulfillment to your life. It's an added bonus if doing what you love on the side earns you a bit of extra cash.

(It's so nice getting some extra moolah and using that for fun activities or new equipment to continue improving your skills)

It's an extra few hours of work added to your working day but if you're doing what you love well then "that aint no thing" and hard work pays off, remember that.

It breaks away from the "paycheck to paycheck" lifestyle, let's you be your own boss, it's a great learning experience and you can make big changes to your life.

Overall, I'm just feeling more satisfied.

Has my work ethic changed in my job?

No, I'm still doing it to the best of my ability but I am coming to a point where I can separate my job from my personal life.

My attitude has changed big-time, not in a negative way but more in a "this is not the be all and end all" - which is much healthier. I am a workaholic, so it's been great to channel some of that into my own projects and reap personal benefits from it.

If you don't have a side hustle, I couldn't recommend it more.

Whether you're making pottery or teaching football on the side - find what you love and do it.

This is where the big things happen.

Hustle, hustle, HUSTLE!

All my love,
